  • Hearspool 19:Obscene Drawings - Momus

    13th November 2017 @ 12:00 am - 1:00 am

    programme/artist information

A sort of irrational exploration of “the questing beast”, the artist who goes beyond the limits of propriety and shocks — or merely tries to shake — the bourgeois order.

During 2013 Momus created a series of radiophonic programmes for Newcastle radio station BasicFM entitled Hearspool. Mesmeric, evocative, and made in the tradition of German neue hoerspiel.

Momus is a Scot who makes songs, books and art. He lives between Europe and Japan.

  • Foundsoundscape - Janek Schaefer

    13th November 2017 @ 2:00 am - 7:00 am

    programme/artist information

It’s been 20 years exactly since I created ‘Recorded Delivery’, which quietly collected sounds of the inner realm of the Post Office in March 1995. Back then I could only use cassettes to capture sound, and there was no internet or digital in my world. Two decades later the technical options are staggering, but simplicity and calm is more in demand than ever before.

Foundsoundscape was inspired by the very first Digital Radio station in the UK, that simply played a recording of a rural location. Radio you could just leave running to add a peaceful ambience to your environment indoors. It heralded a new media paradigm, as digital broadcasting offered more capacity than requred for the first time, and that space needed filling. At the same time on TV, Channel 4 was broadcasting Big Brother live 24hours, and at night I loved to tune-in my analogue TV sets all over the house, and the shed, so I could hear the housemates gently sleeping as I worked through the night. Since then infomercials, and gambling TV have taken over, and I greatly miss that sense of real-time space, that does not demand your attention. Foundsoundscape quietly underscores your environment, by creating new ones from others.

Radio is special as it was the first medium that could be experienced by many people in many places, all at the same time. Foundsoundscape.com is an online radio station that streams live 24hours a day, which can now be broadcast to people all over the globe. Using over 1000 calm & curious location recordings captured by 100+ recordists, the sounds were simply edited, and then played back three at a time at various volumes in shuffle mode, and the result is never the same twice. You often hear the edges of time as files begin or stop playing mid flow. If you listen ever so carefully you can also hear me working in the studio at the end of the garden late at night, as I have a live mic feeding into the mix. I sometimes like to work with tv radio & music playing, to absorb information, give me ideas, create and share. Email me for a shout-out!

My hope is that others will find foundsoundscape enjoyable and leave it running all day & all night long, just like a radio! It’s as simple as that, with one click. A salute to serendipity and shared sonic space. Bookmark it. Play it in rooms around the house. Share it . . Take a break . . .
    Every day is different.
    Happy Daze.

“It’s lovely Janek. I really like listening to it.
Well done! I’ll link it to my friends.” [Brian Eno]

Massive thanks to everyone who has helped make this possible.
Commissioned by the Sonic Art Research Unit, Oxford Brookes, UK
Programming by Efthymios Chatzigiannis & David Tinapple
    Curatorial assistance by Holly Jarvis
    special thanks to Paul Whitty

List of the 100+ audio recorders sending sound from every corner of the globe
Selection was from an open call for contributions, via my newslist, & online, & in print media. The first people to send in sound were chosen by serendipity,
and I curated and edited the content. Future participation is by invitation only.

  • 03222016-000 - Jeff Kolar & jonCates

    13th November 2017 @ 7:45 am - 8:00 am

    programme/artist information

We are interested in creating new electromagnetic infrastructures and proposing narratives or experiences that can be lived in these ephemeral sonic spaces. Our performances utilize an array of electronic and analog instruments, as well as devices designed and fabricated by hand. The tracks on this page were originally produced for our installation and live performance at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago in March 2016. Using variations in speed, long durations, patience, and repetition, we built up musical and auditory foundations through tracks and technologies, slowly filling the museum with various soundscapes. While broadcasting across analog radio signals (via Radius) and digital transmissions (via NUMBERS.FM), we physically moved through the museum after setting up two stages on two floors to perform from.

Jeff Kolar (b. Chicago, US) is a independent sound artist, radio producer, and curator. He is the Founder and Artistic Director of Radius, an experimental radio broadcast platform established in 2010. His work, described as “speaker-shredding” (Half Letter Press), “wonderfully strange” (John Corbett), and “characteristically curious” (Marc Weidenbaum), activates sound in unconventional, temporary, and ephemeral ways using appropriation and remix as a critical practice. His solo and collaborative projects, installations, and public performances often investigate the mundane sonic nuances of everyday electronic devices. He has performed and exhibited widely across the United States, and at international venues and festivals such as the New Museum (New York, US), The Kitchen (New York, US), Moogfest (Durham, US), CTM Festival for Adventurous Music (Berlin, DE), Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago (Chicago, US), Kino Šiška (Ljubljana, SL), Le Cube Centre de création numérique (Paris, FR), ORF RadioKulturhaus (Vienna, AT), LAK Festival of Nordic Sound Art (København, Denmark), among others.

    1. Kyle Vanderburg – Tempest in a Teakettle

The title suggests the small problems we consider daily, waiting as they build within us. ‘Waiting’ is explored in several ways, and uses the medium to augment these daily dramas. After being introduced to the teakettle, the noise of rain and wind begin to fill the sonic space. Soft rains and distant thunder churn over one another in a tempest, giving way to cautious harmonies from the wail of a storm siren. Just as soon, the sirens fade: A full kettle has come to boil. The unease of waiting blurs the sense of scale between the tempest and the teakettle.

Composer Kyle Vanderburg (b. 1986) grew up in Missouri where the Ozarks meet the Mississippi River valley. Raised on southern gospel and American hymnody, his music tries to walk the line between eliciting nostalgia and devising innovative sonic worlds. His electronic works place familiar sounds in new contexts, his acoustic works feature catchy melodies and too many time signatures. He writes music he hopes his parents will like. He holds degrees from Drury University and the University of Oklahoma and has studied under Carlyle Sharpe, Marvin Lamb, Konstantinos Karathanasis, and Roland Barrett. He’d be delighted if you checked out KyleVanderburg.com.

    https://kylevanderburg.com;

    2. Jaxton Su Jingxiang – Sword Magic

Dreamscape is an exploration of how sounds in dreams can be translated aurally to form a narrative that could potentially aid in the understanding of the self. It aims to provide the audience with a sonic experience of the artist’s self-portrait as told by his dreams.

Jaxton Su (b. 1988) is a Singaporean Visual Artist, based in Glasgow, UK. He enjoys experimenting with the use of colours in portraying peculiar narratives that delve into the notions of archetypes and the imaginary. Taking inspirations from the natural environment, Jaxton often creates bizarre dreamlike worlds with a whimsical composition of elements to bring across his ideas. Working with a variety of different mediums such as painting and installation, he hopes to create a visual utopia that could form a resonation with others and spark an imagination.

    http://www.jaxtonsu.net

    3. Hagai Izenberg – Chronicle 6

Chronicles is a weekly format of works that attempt to trace the sounds and happenings on a weekly basis and compress them to 4-5 minutes of sonic experience. Fresh raw materials were collected every week including field recordings, samples from radio & tv and recordings sent by listeners of RadioArt program by Meira Asher on 106fm, who featured the project. It includes 6 episodes (total of 30 minutes) of 6 weeks from Oct 6th till Nov 17th, 2016 and attempts to capture everyday sounds together with the daily news & events, tragedies and political discourse next to advertisements and entertainment.

Hagai is a sound artist, composer and musician and a founder member of the electronic duo Rendezvous. Born in 1978, he lives and works in Israel. His work focuses on collecting and combining field recordings together with radio broadcasting, using sounds we’re exposed to every day in the public and domestic spheres, often in passing or involuntarily. The result is a multi-layered restless composition created in real-time, using pre-recorded sound objects and live sources; a compressed sonic experience of our daily lives.

    4. Bernardo Jiminez – 3am

The Question is one of the longest running projects of this kind in latin america, with more than two decades of constant work. TreesOnComa begun as a side project to -eLaMoRTe-, in order to release under this tag more experimental sound/instrumental pieces and also to offer visual artists the chance to commission sound works for their creations. TreesOnComa has also worked with theatre companies in the past.

    5. Jamie Livingstone – Between Breaths

Puddle Rainbows Missed is a poetry EP by Jamie Livingstone produced by future garage and techno DJs Blackboxx and Acidtone. It centres around the idea of the Mandelbrot Set and iterative patterns. How do these forms commune with the brittle, coarse and tender everyday muck? What are people up to with cucumbers? Who knows anyway? It’s poems mixed with samples. It’s sound and shape.

I started writing poetry when Mr Harrington read us Yeats and almost stopped when I heard what age he lost his virginity.
Yeats, that is, not Mr Harrington.
Who knows what he gets up to.
I am 26. Yeats was 31. I live in Oban. I have no children. I have a full set of teeth.

    https://soundcloud.com/blackboxxproduction

    6. Alexis Weaver – Hot Wheels Lead to Melted Tyres

A toy car, or a monster truck? Zippy, energised gestures leave behind deep, textured trails, exaggerating small sounds with a child’s passion. This piece is part of a larger suite of works drawing on the sounds of childhood toys.

Alexis Weaver is a young electroacoustic composer based in Sydney, Australia. Growing up close to the pristine beaches and landscapes of Jervis Bay, Alexis is fascinated by sounds of the natural world. By fusing her classical education with music technology, Alexis aims to create powerful abstract works and bring the wonder of sound to new audiences.

Alexis has composed soundtracks for animation, short stories, radio, and the Sydney Fringe Festival. Recently, her acousmatic and radiophonic works have been broadcast overseas in France and Scotland. Alexis was awarded First Place and People’s Choice Award in the 2016 and 2015 University of Sydney Verge Awards respectively for her acousmatic works. Alexis’ 2017 work, Spin, will be included on RMN Classical’s upcoming album, Electroacoustic and Beyond Volume 2.

    7. Gregory Kramer – Vampire State Building

Vampire State Building is an eight-channel audio performed piece using lobby recordings of eight New York City landmark buildings (Empire State Building, Trump Tower, Chrysler Building, Waldorf-Astoria, Lipstick Building, Plaza Hotel, 30 Rockefeller Plaza and 1 World Trade Center). This version has been mixed down to stereo.

Gregory Kramer is a multidisciplinary artist working with sound and space. Taking inspiration from his archaeological curiosity of abandoned places and his interest in mythology, he searches for ghosts among the ruins and seeks to unearth evidence of forgotten histories through sound. His sound work uses field recordings, found materials, electronics, instruments and radio transmissions. His work was featured in the Sonom International Sound Art Festival, and he recently composed for a dance piece performed at the Setia Darma Museum of Masks and Puppetry in Bali. He has album releases on Impulsive Habitat and International Winners.

    http://gregorykramerstudio.com/

    8. Katie Currie – Is there anybody out there

Creating artwork that relates to humanities interest in finding life on other planets and our creation of space travel in order to reach out to these potential beings is a particular interest of mine, the way we have created other means to reach them through physical contact or transmission is fascinating to me. ‘Is there anyone out there?’ consists of a collection of audio clips that are a combination of mysterious signals received from space and unexplainable radio transmissions alongside a Morse code translation of the phrase ‘is there anybody out there?’ which plays intermittently.

    9. Amanda Brannin – I tried ruling the world

    “i tried ruling the world”

    -spoken poem/ soundscape

I’m a young Texan currently held between mountains in East Iceland making whatever calls to me, often using my actions and voice.

  • Is Land a Voice - Jordan Dykstra

    13th November 2017 @ 9:00 am - 10:00 am

    programme/artist information

This 60 minute recording was produced in July 2016 in Ano Syros, Greece (as
part of the Syros’ Sound Meetings residency) and is the first realization of a score entitled Inner Sound. This enhanced field recording was recorded during two takes using a Zoom H6 handheld recorder, airhorns, and audience participation. Finally, in editing, sine-tones were added to correspond to the altitude of the journey up and down the path, from the highest point on the island to sea level.

Jordan Dykstra is a composer and performer born in Sioux City, IA, who was formally educated throughout the United States and informally throughout Europe. Some of his
interests include psychoacoustics, plants, invention, drinking coffee, noise, and his cat Basil. In 2015 Jordan founded Editions Verde, a small-run music publisher interested in the relationship between physical objects and sound.

  • Location Series #1 - Alessandro Bosetti

    13th November 2017 @ 12:00 pm - 12:15 pm

    programme/artist information

In this piece I have recorded as many people as possible within a certain period of time. Wherever I went I asked people to say “here” in their own mother language. Each person was asked to say this word only once, and only in cases of perfect bi- or tri-lingualism did I allow them to say it in additional languages. I have edited all of these single-word samples chronologically in the exact order in which they were recorded. All recordings were made between August 12th and October 30th, 2017 in Vicobarone (IT), Milano (IT), Marseille (FR), Porto (PT), Marseille (FR), Taipei (TW), Bologna (IT) and Lyon (FR).

People, microphones and languages move, at least in relation to each other. Their movement is somehow unpredictable and free as a beautiful dance. Whilst scanning the territory I experienced how linguistic and geographical landscapes intersect in complex ways and how every territory is constantly transversed in multiple directions by so many living beings.

Each of these recordings of a single word is evidence of an individual being in a specific place at a specific moment in time although we may not know the actual details of who, where and when. People come and go and are found in unexpected places, each one of them with her/his own biography and memory. The microphone has its own schedule, its own agenda, and opens a window towards the future and the not here. Languages moreover, travel with people, sometimes the same person carries two, three or more. Languages are not bound to a specific location or to a specific person as they migrate from place to place and from mouth to mouth.

In triangulating languages, individuals and the microphone we obtain precise coordinates of pure existence but we may not be able to infer proper locations. Nevertheless all these coordinates draw a path, a road, a corrugated and fascinating itinerary worthy of travelling over and over again with our ears and imagination. Consider this piece a travelogue, or a meditation on voice in relative space and have a nice trip.

  • Meet Me at the Cemetery Gates plus Horses - For Now Collective

    13th November 2017 @ 12:30 pm - 1:00 pm

    programme/artist information

Horses – An immersive, cinematic portrait of T.Cribbs & Sons, one of East London’s oldest funeral directors. Specialising in traditional horse-drawn funerals they are the only firm who still have their own stables. This captures the intimate relationships they have with their horses, and the quiet intensity of their work. One of 28 audio portraits designed to be listened to whilst wandering through an overgrown Victorian cemetery park in Mile End in London.

Meet me at cemetery gates – Neglected for years, Tower Hamlets Cemetery Park was originally one of London’s Magnificent Seven cemeteries. It stretches for 31 acres and is the city’s largest urban woodland. From cemetery to nature reserve, the park mirrors the East End’s long history of providing a refuge and haven for (im)migrants. We meet those who played there long ago, Serbian foragers, bird-watchers and to children who visit the park now, who all create a portrait of this bewitching space.

    programme/artist information

“They say you should never stop drinking suddenly. But that was exactly what I did…”
The day after his alcoholic mother’s funeral, David starts his own nightmarish battle with withdrawal. A first-person docudrama based on real-life experience, The Last Glass takes listeners on a vivid hallucinatory journey through grief, psychosis and delirium and out the other side.

Content note: contains graphic descriptions of violence and self-harm plus one use of strong language.

Love Without Sound are an audiovisual duo comprising David Badger and Abi Bliss, from Wakefield and Huddersfield. Sonically, they take acoustic instruments and electronic sounds, the technologically advanced and the deliberately naïve, and combine them in organic and unearthly ways. Previous work includes Reasons for Admission, an installation for a padded cell at the Mental Health Museum; Pixophytoflora, an AV performance at Light Night Liverpool; and The Sum of All Knowledge, a film for Wakefield Artwalk.

  • Inside Outside - Camilla Hannan

    13th November 2017 @ 5:00 pm - 5:30 pm

    programme/artist information

The Territory Wildlife Park is a 400-hectare expanse of native bush land located south-west of Darwin, Australia. By day the sonic landscape is suppressed by heat. However, at night, the bush swells with insects, birds and mysterious rustlings through the pandanus.

Field recordist and radio maker Camilla Hannan spent three weeks living on the edges of the park. She spoke with the land’s traditional custodians and park workers to examine how the sounds of our environment reflect our connection to country and each other.

Commissioned by ABC RN’s Soundproof 2016

Camilla Hannan is an Australian radio producer, sound artist and field recordist. Her art and radio works have been exhibited, performed, installed and broadcast in Australia and internationally. Underlying all her work is a deep fascination with the way we listen and how this listening impacts upon our micro and macro worlds.

  • Location Series #1 - Alessandro Bosetti

    13th November 2017 @ 6:00 pm - 6:15 pm

    programme/artist information

• Red Rooms in Subterranean Dwellings - Pangaean Permafaction

    13th November 2017 @ 6:30 pm - 7:00 pm

    programme/artist information

Red Rooms in Subterranean Dwellings explores myriad nagging uncertainties, as they are revealed to be mundane, yet ripe currency for exchange with ever present fearmongers.
Or alternatively, a place to burn a light, indulging introspection and surreal dreaming as a wellspring for imagination.

This piece is a response to H.G. Wells’ “The Red Room ” short story from 1874. Taken
simply, it’s a brief gothic test of credulity: to cause a shiver, as a fireside read. But typical of Wells, there is another effort there — interpreting and projecting a rapidly shifting social
climate. Wells delivers Fear as a commodity, packaged and constrained by the four walls of his Red Room; promoted by an indentured peerage of brokers. This Fear is materially real, yet allows for conscientious refusal — by sustained efforts to keep light burning in it’s
    shadow.

The passing century has seen rapid shifts to the present day, where we face a far diminished risk and tangible cause for fear. Conscious endeavour has emphatically explored the unknown, and forcefully pursued uncertainty; ultimately fueling discovery, creativity and progress. Regrettably, those misfortunes which do catastrophically disrupt safety and security are too often tractable to evident, deliberate machinations. Our sense of fear is organic and innate, but our attachment to it, often misdirected.

The narrative and sound design are developed by methods of process and constraint. This
facilitates the artists working simultaneously, in physical isolation, to produce convergent
expression: a structure of narrative voices braided through spatial timbral and rhythmic layers. There is the impression is of a ‘musical’ piece physically mobile in an extensive unfamiliar world. The language and instrumental devices can seem familiar, but there is ambiguity and strangeness, reflecting the individually dissociative influence of the generative compositional processes. Shifting dynamics and textures let the listener infer their own fears to the strangeness, or find empathic resolve in the leading, dreamlike narrative. A rich rhythmic and harmonic palette that references and extends the stylings of contemporary electronic music, exploiting a range of software and hardware tools along with fieldsourced recordings, samples and voice processing. The sound artists responsible frequently work with radical applications of acousmatic and concrete techniques, here moderated, to serve an impression of musical norms, gradually revealing little that concedes to convention.

Cast in sediments of the last great flood, Pangaean Permafaction stands as a collective of experimental sound artists who may never physically meet.

Current projects are traversing four points of the globe, between participants in Australia and England:

*A Patch Of Nettles* — a solo sound project from small town New South Wales, Australia, keeping busy adapting field recordings to acousmatic arrangements, constructing electronic instruments and collaborating with strangers. Nettles is regular contributor to the avant garde Disquiet Junto project and is published on Bandcamp and Soundcloud.

*Pytchblend* — an English sound artist whose work studies the half-awake moments before the onset of sleep using AMSR and frisson-inducing spectral manipulation into audio dreamlets. Pytchblend is a regular on RTÉ’s Nova in Ireland, Berlin Community Radio and is published on Bandcamp and Soundcloud and youtube.

*TheNumbersInTheDream* — an English multi-instrumental itinerant sorcerer, wearing a hat of eternal paradox. At times, he is not real. Other times he creates warmly received echoing melodies shrouded by inscrutable ghost voices. Nick can be found on the Fag Ash Records net label, Soundcloud , youtube and spinning sound on Mixcloud where he inexorably winds new genres in song.

*KeithysDunimselfaMischief* — an Australian sound artist who poses the question, “does the silence create the sound or does the sound create the silence?” He finds that the answer is unreservedly, “yes it does”. He has received regular Australian airplay on RN’s Sound Quality , and Bay FM in northern NSW. He enjoys sleeping and is published on Soundcloud.

  • Mind Lice - Dave Madden aka nonnon

    13th November 2017 @ 7:00 pm - 7:30 pm

    programme/artist information

I’m enamored with the idea of self(ish)-help and prescriptions for deeper purpose – though, after iterations of these across centuries, we’re still fucked up. We can’t focus. We get a notion and don’t follow through because we’re constantly distracted. Life is easier with distractions. It is a mental frenzy. Add to that the 2016 election in my nation, and I’m personally, uncomfortably numb.

That’s what I’m doing with this work: showing you the battle between mental frenzy and ASMR, hypnotism, Gematria, meditation, and a bunch of cult-speak I was mired in, though recently shrugged off after 21 years etc.

Dave Madden’s (aka dj_webern, nonnon, Chomsky at the Bit, Wasabi P) earliest memories are Magical Mystery Tour, “Paint it Black” and the guy who claimed to be the Lizard King. He uses percussion, found objects, laptop, turntables and an obsessive bending of synthesizers into the way they are not supposed to react to perform and / or DJ all over the world, from Montreal to Chico, California, in universities, museums and coffee shops, preferring the types of crowds who enjoy John Cage back to back with Anti-Pop Consortium.

  • Radioart106fm #93: Floy Krouchi - Fukushima Radiography

    13th November 2017 @ 8:00 pm - 9:00 pm

    programme/artist information

This is a selection of seven shows from ‘radioart106fm’ compiled for radiophrenia 2017. It contains the creations of female Radio and Sound artists

A radiophonic essay by Floy krouchi, Hélène Lucien and Marc Pallain

How to make visible the invisible radioactivity? Hélène Lucien et Marc Pallain went on the field, in the exclusion zone around Fukushima nuclear plant. They entrusted the sonic composition of this experience to the sound artist Floy Krouchi.

To reveal the imprint of radioactivity and crystallise a concrete, undeniable proof of the invisible, Héléne Lucien (a plastic artist) and Marc Pallain (a photographer) placed, in 2012, just one year after the catastrophe, and in 2016, some analog blank medical radiographic films in the exclusion zone around Fukushima nuclear plant. They subjected them to ionising radiation during variable periods ( 3 to 37 days) and different levels of radiation (between 3.8 microSievert/h and 40 microSievert/h). The result is a series of images called “Chronoradiograms”, real internal landscapes ( inner visions) resting on photography as a revelator of the index of radioactivity.

In “Fukushima Radiography”, the sound creation was composed by Floy Krouchi from the sounds collected by Hélène Lucien and Marc Pallain in Fukushima with, as a central element, stretched, unrecognizable and essential: the dosimeter. She also questions the two artists about their work in the Fukushima exclusion zone, and their physical sensations while being exposed to high rates of radiation. It implies the question of subjectivity, of the risk ,of the commitment and the involvement of the body in the contaminated zone.

Simultaneously, the poetic and visionary writing of the poet Jotaro Wakamatsu recreates images through a series of premonitory poems recited in French and Japanese by
Gyohel Zaitsu. These poems deal with the ineluctable coming catastrophe on the Fukushima zone, echoing that of Tchernobyl which had deeply impressed the poet following his stay in1987.

With excerpts from « Hitono Akashi » : Jotaro Wakamatsu translated from english by Jacques and Jacqueline Krouchi
With: Gyohei Zaitsu, Jotaro Wakamatsu, Michael Ferrier, Madame Takahashi.
Additional text Hélène Lucien and Marc Pallain
    Original composition Floy Krouchi

Produced and presented by Meira Asher, The program’s host station KolHaCampus106fm closed down on August 31, 2017. Between the summers of 2014 and 2017, Meira aired 107 programs and several specials, part of which were Radia.fm member stations productions.

In the aftermath of this agonising farewell, ‘radioart106fm’ is reforming and will reappear soon, starting with a monthly show on Radio Campus Bruxelles in 2018.

  • Echo Chamber - Ross Whyte

    13th November 2017 @ 9:00 pm - 14th November 2017 @ 12:00 am

    programme/artist information

An experimental durational piece which utilises field recordings made in Sri Lanka between February and April 2017 and in Glasgow between August and October 2017. These recordings are combined, compared and contrasted to explore musical commonalities in aspects of urban and natural soundscapes as well as spoken word and song.
My aim is to create an abstract illustration of echoes which I have identified between two very vibrant soundscapes, which I have found myself immersed in this year.

Ross Whyte is a composer and sound artist. In 2012 he completed a practice-based PhD in Musical Composition where his field of research was impermanence in audio-visual intermedia and headphone-specific composition. His compositional output in recent years has often included collaborations with artists of disciplines different from my own, including dance, theatre, sculpture and web design. Since early 2016 he has worked as one half of the Gaelic ambient electronica duo, WHɎTE with singer-songwriter Alasdair Whyte. Their acclaimed debut album, Fairich, was released in 2016 and has received positive reviews and regular national and international radio airplay.
